Southeastern Archeological Services assists clients in locating and managing a wide variety of cultural resources.  One important service goal is to ensure that our clients are in full compliance with all State and Federal regulations using the most cost-effective and expedient approach.  We help guide the client through regulatory and permitting processes, with the goal of avoiding any delays in project scheduling.  Types of cultural resources that the firm deals with include:

  • Prehistoric archeological sites
  • Historic archeological sites
  • Standing historic structures
  • Cemeteries

The key component in cultural resources management is the multifaceted task of archeological assessment.  Generally, tracts of land or specific cultural resources are evaluated in terms of research potential and eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places.  Specific services provided in this area include:

  • Documentary research
  • Reconnaissance survey
  • Intensive survey
  • Historic structure evaluation
  • National Register evaluation 

Southeastern Archeological Services performs large, medium and small-scale archeological excavations in areas to be impacted by development.  Specific services provided include:

  • Formulation of mitigation plans
  • Development of research designs
  • Mechanically aided excavation
  • Analysis and interpretation 

Several remote sensing techniques have been perfected in recent years to the point where they can provide a significant advantage in the rapid location of surface and subsurface features.  Through a subcontracting agreement, we offer the following services:

  • Ground penetrating radar
  • Proton magnetometer surveying
  • Resistivity surveying
  • Aerial photograph interpretation 

The company also conducts archeological investigations to enhance the authenticity of historic restoration projects.  Usually the firm participates as part of an interdisciplinary team, complementing historical and architectural perspectives.  Services provided include:

  • Archival research
  • Historical archeology
  • Historic architectural assessment
  • Preservation plans
  • National Register nominations 

Southeastern Archeological Services owns a 2,600 sq.ft. office and laboratory facility located at 565 North Milledge Avenue in downtown Athens.  Besides standard office and laboratory equipment, the company employs a state-of-the-art computer system. 

The company owns a full complement of survey and excavation equipment and three field vehicles.  The principals of the company are aware of the equipment needs of any size or type of project in the Southeast and can anticipate and arrange the acquisition of special project-specific equipment.
